GEO: what is Generative Engine Optimization?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is about optimizing your content so it gets cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Definition, how it differs from SEO, and best practices.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing your content so it gets cited and reused by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Where classic SEO aims to rank in a list of blue links, GEO aims to become the source the AI cites in its answer.

GEO vs SEO: the difference in one sentence

  • SEO: rank well in a results page that the user browses.
  • GEO: be the source an AI assistant picks, synthesizes and cites in its generated answer.

The two aren’t opposed. Content that ranks well is more likely to be ingested by AI. But GEO adds requirements specific to how language models work.

Why GEO is becoming unavoidable

More and more people ask their questions directly to an AI instead of a search engine. When the assistant answers, it often surfaces only a handful of sources — sometimes just one. If your brand isn’t cited, it’s invisible, even if you rank first on Google.

For an e-commerce store or a SaaS, the stakes are twofold:

  1. Visibility: being named in answers about your space.
  2. Traffic: capturing the clicks from those citations (Perplexity and AI Overviews show links).

GEO best practices

Models favor clear, structured, factual content. In practice:

  • Answer the question in the first sentence. AI readily extracts the intro paragraph that defines or directly answers.
  • Use explicit headings (H2/H3) phrased as questions or intents.
  • Use lists and tables. They’re easy to parse and reuse.
  • Give crisp definitions of a term before using it.
  • Cite numbers, dates and sources. Models favor verifiable content.
  • Add a FAQ section with real questions and short answers.
  • Stay current. A recent update date increases the trust placed in the content.

How to know it’s working

This is the often-forgotten part: measuring. Two signals to track:

  1. Citations: do your brand or URL appear in answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini? (regular manual checks, or citation-tracking tools).
  2. AI referral traffic: how many visitors land on your site from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com? It’s a fast-growing channel that many analytics setups still misattribute.

That’s exactly where clean tracking makes the difference: if you don’t measure generative-AI traffic, you’ll never know which content brings you customers. We detail the method in How to track ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic.

FAQ

Does GEO replace SEO? No. GEO complements it. A solid SEO foundation (quality content, healthy technical structure) remains the base; GEO adds an optimization layer for AI answer engines.

Should I block AI bots? If you want to be cited, don’t block the answer engines’ crawlers. Blocking model training is a separate matter (and a separate bot).

How long until I see results? Like SEO, GEO plays out over time. Clear, up-to-date, well-structured content gets picked up gradually as models and their indexes refresh.
